In this episode of Win the Day:

Until death, all defeat is psychological.” — Marcus Aurelius

You’ve likely heard the saying: decisions equal destiny. But how can you make good decisions, especially in a world of noise, overwhelm, and pressure?

Our guest Jon Fussell (known as “Fuss”) is a retired Navy SEAL Lieutenant Commander. Over a 20-year military career, he led the most elite special mission units on hundreds of direct-action combat missions across eight deployments.

Fuss served in tactical leadership roles on SEAL Teams 3, 4, 10, as well as SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team Two. He then served as a Troop Commander at the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (SEAL Team 6).

Today, as founder of Patriot Leadership Development, Fuss helps corporate executives build high-functioning, cohesive teams around the globe. He uses real-world battlefield scenarios to teach leaders how to navigate intense ethical dilemmas and maintain operational clarity under immense pressure.

He holds an MBA from Duke University and has mastered leadership strategy through elite executive programs at both Harvard and Oxford.

Fuss lives and breathes a powerful truth: we cannot always control the actions of our adversaries or markets, but we can completely control our response and own our pace.

In this episode:

  • How to install a culture where "calm is contagious".
  • The exact framework elite teams use to debrief a major win, not just a failure.
  • How to make decisions under pressure that maximize your organizational velocity.
  • The best lessons from a 20-year career in the most elite special forces.

Let’s WIN THE DAY with Jon Fussell!

Inspiring quotes in this episode:
  • "If you're not cutting it in the SEAL teams, there really aren't any other soldiers in the Navy. I put $1M+ dollars into getting you through BUD/S and you're not cutting into the SEAL teams, but you're trained to be a soldier. Sailors do great stuff, but they're not marching and carrying guns and doing soldiery stuff. They're running Navy ships. So there's really no other place for you." — Jon Fussell
  • "Anybody who's seen a significant amount of combat is going to be humble as the day is long. We've been there when we've lost guys who are absolute studs and it's just a numbers game. If you think you're a tough guy in combat, you're not. If your number's up, your number's up." — Jon Fussell
  • "If I was in charge for the day, I'd have mandatory service for the whole country, 18 to 20. And I'd include the forestry service, the Red Cross, the post office. If you're like, 'Oh, I don't want to carry a gun.' Don't carry a gun. Deliver mail. Go plant trees. Do something, but have some skin in the game. Contribute to this system." — Jon Fussell
  • "Whatever your industry is, the recipe for top performance is pretty basic: it's high functioning teams and great leaders. That's it." — Jon Fussell
  • "You have to create an environment where people are not afraid to weigh in." — Jon Fussell
  • "I wouldn’t trade my wrestling background for the world. Combative sports where you’ve got someone physically putting their hands on you and trying to prevent you from doing everything you’re trying to do. It was a good feeder pipeline into what I ended up doing in the SEAL teams." — Jon Fussell
  • "In BUD/S, there was an SEC football player. He was huge. Just chiseled out of stone. That guy lasted like 15 minutes. At the end of training, some guys aren’t much to look at and some guys are beasts. You just never know." — Jon Fussell
  • "We bond with people. We grow as people, as individuals when we go through physical, mental, emotional anguish. The hard stuff is what forms the tightest bonds." — Jon Fussell
  • "If you need a motivational speaker to come in and do some rah, rah to get you to do your job, I don’t want you on my team anyway. You shouldn’t need a cheerleader—we’re not in high school." — Jon Fussell
  • "If your moral compass is askew, that’s a big problem. You’re not meant for this. If it’s just a performance thing, you need to get better at a particular skill, we can work with that." — Jon Fussell
  • "You just got to be world-class at the basics. That way, when you come to the really tough decisions, the basics are all muscle memory and you can focus your energy on something else." — Jon Fussell
  • "I advanced as a leader significantly when I started raising kids. That’s a different game altogether." — Jon Fussell
  • "Forgive quickly and move on. Forgive others, forgive yourself, move on." — Jon Fussell
  • "Never stop working the problem." — Jon Fussell
